Implanon Removal and Insertion

Woman With Female Doctor

Dr Sehli Quaddus and Dr Hooi Lin Ooi perform this procedure.

What is it?

The implant is a small, flexible rod that is inserted under the skin of the inner upper arm. It slowly releases a progestogen hormone to prevent pregnancy for up to three years. Progestogen is one of the hormones used in the combined oral contraceptive pill (the Pill) and is similar to the natural hormone progesterone produced by the body.

At Bloom, we insert and remove Implanon and Jadelle implants. Local anaesthetic is used for both insertion and removal, making it a simple and relatively pain-free procedure. Implanon removals can sometimes be tricky due to scar tissue around the rod, so please allow 30 minutes for your removal appointment.

Mirena / Kyleena insertion

Dr May Ann Wong performs this procedure.

Please note that the Mirena will be inserted at the Bloom clinic. Local anaesthetic is provided; however, there is no option for sedation at the clinic. All patients are required to have a full screening consult with Dr May Ann Wong prior to the insertion of a Mirena or Kyleena.

The hormonal IUD (Mirena®) is a small T-shaped plastic device inserted into the uterus (womb) through the vagina by a doctor specially trained in IUD placement.

“It is common for women to feel some cramps or pain during and/or after insertion, and occasionally it is inserted under anaesthetic,” explains Dr Newman.

Once in place, the IUD slowly releases a hormone called progestogen into your uterus. Progestogen is similar to the hormone progesterone produced by the ovaries and prevents pregnancy from occurring.

At Bloom Women’s Wellness Clinic, we provide care for women at every stage of life—from the challenges of painful first periods to the transitions of menopause and everything in between.
